Enhancing life participation and quality of life is consistent with frameworks of the World Health Organization and ASHA’s Scope of Practice for speech-language pathologists.  By shifting clinical focus from the impairment to a participation level, many individuals with aphasia can resume activities of choice. This seminar will review the rationale supporting the Life Participation Approach to Aphasia (LPAA). Specific applications of LPAA across the following healthcare settings will be provided: acute care, rehabilitation, home health care, skilled nursing, outpatient, and community-based programs. In addition, specific examples of how successful changes were made at the healthcare systems level and with regards to outcome measurement will be shared. Examples will be chosen to reflect a variety of real world approaches that clinicians can apply in their own clinical settings. Time will be reserved for discussion and brainstorming of audience questions/answers.

Instructional Level:  Intermediate

Learning Outcomes:

1.)  Identify literature and data that support the use of life participation models.

2.)  Describe 3 specific examples of how a life participation framework can be implemented in a variety of clinical settings.

3.)  List three benefits of increasing community participation for people with aphasia.
