Leora R. Cherney, PhD, CCC-SLP, Board Certified-ANCDS
Leora R. Cherney, Ph.D., is Professor of Physical Medicine and Rehabilitation at Northwestern University, Feinberg School of Medicine and Senior Clinical Research Scientist at the Rehabilitation Institute of Chicago, Chicago, Illinois. She has had more than 25 years of clinical experience working with adults with neurogenic communication disorders and presently directs the Center for Aphasia Research and Treatment at the Rehabilitation Institute of Chicago. Dr. Cherney is board-certified in neurologic communication disorders by the Academy of Neurologic Communication Disorders and Sciences (ANCDS) and a Fellow of both the American Speech-Language-Hearing Association and the Illinois Speech-Language Hearing Association. Dr. Cherney has co-authored four books related to various aspects of adult neurogenic communication disorders and has many publications in refereed journals, textbooks, and other periodicals. She regularly presents at workshops and conferences nationally. Her research interests, which have been federally funded for over 15 years, have focused on treatment approaches for aphasia and on attention and discourse problems in adults with cognitive-communication disorders.
Course Description Level of Instruction: Intermediate
This course will present an overview of new and emerging approaches to aphasia treatment, including the theoretical background, procedures, and current evidence supporting treatments that can be readily used by practicing clinicians. Discussion will focus on issues affecting recovery and rehabilitation including treatment intensity, alternative methods of service delivery including computer-based therapies, and biological advances that may enhance the effects of speech-language treatment.
Workshop Objective
The conference attendees will be able to:
1. Categorize major approaches to the treatment of aphasia.
2. Explain the importance of social / life participation approaches to the treatment of aphasia
3. Define neuroplasticity and discuss implications for rehabilitation and recovery in aphasia.
4. List procedures for administering at least four specific aphasia treatment techniques.
5. Describe current evidence supporting the role of the right hemisphere in aphasia treatment.
6. Describe ways in which technology can assist in the delivery of speech-language services to individuals with aphasia
7. Summarize the evidence supporting at least four different treatments of aphasia.
