This course will focus on improving the management and functional outcomes of head and neck cancer patients who have dysphagia and dysphonia. The session will discuss the physiology of the disorders and the medical and surgical management of this challenging population. The role of the speech pathologist in the rehabilitation process will be discussed as well as the future in managing these patients.
 
Level of Instruction: Advanced
 
The conference attendees upon completion of this course will be able to:
1.             Describe the physiology behind dysphagia and dysphonia.
2.             Identify the effects of surgery and radiotherapy on swallowing and voice functions.
3.             Identify a variety of assessments and treatment techniques for dysphonia and dysphagia.
4.             Demonstrate understanding of surgical management with dysphagia and dysphonia.
5.             Describe the rehabilitation team for this population and the role of the speech pathologist.
6.             Describe areas for future research and impact on functional outcomes.
