Kiarash Shahlaie, MD, PhD is the Assistant Professor and Director of Neurotrauma & Functional Neurosurgery in the Department of Neurological Surgery at UC Davis. During his residency he was awarded the School of Medicine Alumni Association's 2009 House Staff Professionalism Award. He has developed subspecialty interests in neurotrauma, minimally invasive skull base neurosurgery and functional neurosurgery. He is a nationally recognized speaker, author and presenter and a gifted teacher.
Learn the state of the art neurosurgical interventions for neurological insults – including the rationale for use of each one based one case reviews and neuroanatomical review.
Learn through case reports the course of intervention from emergent treatment through management and medical stabilization for rehabilitation.
Understand the relationship of medical implications of injury to the brain and the long term consequences as it relates to patient recovery.
Discuss the concept of neuroplasticity and the role it plays in the decision making process of neurosurgical interventions.
Discuss the various approaches used to deliver difficult news to families when prognosis is grave or guarded.
Gain insight into the experience of a neurological injury through the eyes of a surgeon through a survivor’s journey and the importance of both as it relates to patient recovery.
