The course will establish the physiologic foundation of swallowing function and impairment that underpin the Modified Barium Swallowing Impairment Profile: MBSImP. Thorough understanding of the complexity of swallowing physiology and the interactions of swallowing with related systems must be the foundation for achieving advanced competency in the evaluation and treatment of swallowing disorders. Overlapping disorders of the upper aerodigestive tract will be presented using an interactive, diverse case-based approach to learning. An overview and rationale for the development and implementation of MBSImP will be provided. The participants will learn to recognize and practice scoring the physiologic swallowing components contained on the MBSImP. Participants will be introduced to the scoring schema across varied dysphagic patient groups and practice identifying the physiologic targets of treatment using the MBSImP.
- Describe in detail the physiologic components of oropharyngeal and esophageal swallowing function
- Identify and detail system interactions relevant to swallowing efficiency, airway protection, and nutrition.
- Describe the relevance of standardized swallowing practice underlying the development of the MBSImP
- List and define standardized terms for describing MBS visual observations of the swallowing mechanism
- List and practice scoring the 17 physiologic swallowing components comprising the MBSImP
- Detail targets of evidence based treatment from MBSImP scored profiles.
